Action on feral pigs underway

Tuesday 11 August 2020

Feral pigs cause more than $100 million in damage to national agriculture each year. At the same time, their numbers have the potential to increase by 85 per cent annually.

A National Feral Pig Action Plan is a huge step in the right direction but the challenge will be to develop a multi-stakeholder coordinated approach to manage feral pigs, with effective control representing a cull to their numbers of 55 to 70 per cent each year.

AgForce’s representative on the 14-person steering group and the Plan’s core writing group is Ms Zena Ronnfeldt. A feral pig report was released at the Group’s first meeting on 15 July.

More information is available on the Australian Pork and feral pig websites.

You can also hear directly from National Feral Pig Management Coordinator Heather Channon by reading her July report.
