Last week was a big week with AGMs and Board meetings in Ayr for AgForce Queensland Farmers and AgForce Cane, plus the ICPA 50th Anniversary Federal Conference in Longreach. We’ve got some great end-of-year events coming up; check them out below, and remember to register early for our major North Region event in Townsville in February.

Last Wednesday the 2021 Annual General Meetings for AgForce Queensland and AgForce Cane were held in the Burdekin, at the Claredale Pastures Café in Clare, followed by an afternoon of industry discussions, drinks, canapes and a BBQ dinner with both Boards including current and previous AgForce presidents. The AgForce Qld Farmers Board went on to hold their November board meeting in the region.

Karumba live cattle export facility sold

The Port of Karumba's live export loading yards, built in 1990, sold last week, having seen little use since the 2019 monsoon trough floods. Of the 33 live export vessels currently approved for Australian use, only one is approved to access the Port of Karumba, because of the shallow, 2.3-metre draught.

Following the final export of zinc concentrate from Century Mine in 2016, the dredging program for the Norman River was suspended until New Century Resources recommenced dredging to service its tailings re-processing operations at Century Mine tailings 2018.

The 2019 floods then caused major sedimentation in the shipping channel and further challenges to dredging.

The future of the site is uncertain. The new owner plans to redevelop the site if there is no interest from exporters.

ICPA Federal Conference partners’ field tour

On Wednesday last week I had the pleasure of assisting with the 50th Anniversary ICPA Federal Conference in Longreach by accompanying delegates partners David Morton, Lawrie Duncombe, Keith Shoecraft, Geoff Terry and Jim McKenzie on a field trip to White Hill and Latrobe stations south of Longreach.

Thank you Duncan and Liz Emmott, and Donald and Wendy Brown, for your hospitality and time hosting us. We saw some dry country waiting for storms, as well as exclusion fencing and the results of regenerative grazing.
